In the rush for broadband access many ISPs have left dialup behind. Does that mean that dialup is dead? Far from it; it's on the decline but will still be in demand for some time. Consider the figures:
(From the UK Office of National Statistics)

What do the figures show? That over 20% still use dialup. Why is dialup still used?
- Residential
- Some areas still can't get broadband
- Many only use the Internet occassionally and prefer Pay-As-You-Go dialup
- Temporary accomodation limits ability to sign a 12 month broadband contract
- Business
- Proliferation of old PCs with dialup modems; "if it ain't broke.." attitude!
- Part-time staff or offices only require simple email access
- ISDN backup lines in case main connection goes down
- Employer may not want Internet for staff, but still needs to download emails
The fact is that the 20% of the market that use dialup are being catered for by less and less ISPs; it's a great time to 'mop up' the dialup business for ISPs who provide dialup.
